Last summer, I discovered the joys of coconut oil, not as a food, but as a moisturizer. The only problem is that it’s a bit messy. After doing a bit of research, I discovered that mixing it with cocoa butter would produce a more “workable” product. I warmed a combination up in a bain-marie, let the result harden to a mushy texture and then whipped the mixture up to a nice fluffy butter
The result was a bit more workable, buuuut it really didn’t look very pretty sitting on the side of the tub (more like a bowl of leftover porridge than a super lush body cream).
I did a bit more research, and discovered a recipe for “lotion bars”: equal parts beeswax, cocoa butter, and coconut oil. I used the same bain-marie method to head them up, then I poured them into various molds: a few three-ounce bars and four lovely little one-and-a-quarter ounce bars. I tried different fragrances–vanilla, citrus, herb, and straight perfume. The result was pretty great! I also tried a lip gloss, which was the same recipe, but with a small slice of lipstick melted into it as well. After I poured the mixture into molds, I froze them for about a half hour. The results were much better than I anticipated:
